As part of efforts to reinvent itself to suit the changing needs of customers, post offices are already offering railway passenger reservation services in eight places in the Chennai city region (CCR), including at IIT-Madras and Shastri Bhavan. About 6,000 railway tickets are booked or cancelled in city post offices every month.

The department will offer facilities for residents to book bus tickets online for SRM Transports through 94 head post offices across the State. Officials of the postal department said in Chennai region, 20 head post offices, including on Anna Road, Mylapore and T. Nagar, would book tickets online.

Mervin Alexander, Postmaster general, CCR, said: “We will tie up with more private bus operators and extend the ticketing service to more post offices depending on the patronage.” Post offices will also have a soft drink vending machine installed.
