A 27-year-old gangster was brutally assaulted by a gang on Tiruvottiyur High (TH) Road on Saturday. The victim, S. Dhananchezhian (27), is the main accused in the murder of the father of Sheikh Mohammad, one of the assailants.

Dhananchezhian, who has more than a dozen criminal cases including murder against him, was on his way to his grandmother’s house in Tiruvottiyur on his motorcycle when the four-member gang led by Sheikh Mohammad attacked him with sickles around 11.45 a.m. Dhanachezhian’s cries for help brought onlookers to the spot and the gang fled.

The injured man was admitted to Government Stanley Hospital and his condition is said to be stable. A case has been filed by the Tiruvottiyur police. “The victim had just come out on bail in a murder case a fortnight ago. He had regularly been visiting his grandmother’s house. The gang had been waiting for him to settle scores,” said an investigating officer.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent episodes involving Dhananchezhian and the family of Sheikh Mohammad. In March, he and three others had hacked Sheikh Mohammad’s father Abdul Gaffar to death as the latter had refused to marry his daughter to Dhananchezhian. He had met Gaffar’s daughter when she along with her family used to live in Tiruvottiyur. Soon, Gaffar shifted to Washermetpet but Dhananchezhian kept insisting that he would marry Gaffar’s daughter.

When Gaffar refused, Dhananchezhian brutally assaulted him in October. Gaffar slowly recovered from his injuries and made plans to get his daughter married off to someone else. An angry Dhananchezhian, who had come out on bail in the assault case, finally murdered Gaffar.
