Students of single-teacher schools in and around Kancheepuram will soon have better lighting during the evening hours.

The Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society (SVRDS) distributed 75 solar lamps to 75 village schools at a function held at Sriperumbudur Single Teacher Schools Unit recently.

K.K. Sai Sekhar, a member of single-teacher schools, said the solar-powered lamps provided to the schools meant teachers could conduct classes without any interruption in the evening hours. He said the solar lamps were distributed to the schools at a cost of Rs. 3.75 lakh.

SVRDS has established single-teacher schools in 580 villages in Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts. Students in these schools are in the age group of 5 and 12 years, and are given value-based education in Tamil and English, and also taught mathematics and general science. Classes are held from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

R. Nataraj, president of Single-Teacher Schools, and E. Varadhrajan, principal of Vivekananda MHSS, Sriperumbudur, participated.
