A 30-year-old software engineer died when he jumped into a swimming pool inside an apartment complex in Rajakilpakkam on Sunday evening.

According to Selaiyur police, Raju Raj Shankar of Khankarbhag in Patna, Bihar, jumped into the pool, whose depth is a little more than four feet. He landed on his head and sustained critical cut injuries and died a little later.

The victim was a software engineer with a private firm here. Along with four other friends from Bihar, he was living in a rented flat at Rajakilpakkam.

He had taken a day off on Sunday and, around 7.30 p.m., jumped into the swimming pool inside the complex. Subash, his roommate, told The Hindu at Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet that the five of them had moved into the flat only this month. “He was underwater and did not move. We took him to a private clinic opposite the apartments, where the doctor asked us to take him to a bigger hospital. We took him to a private hospital where he was declared dead,” Subash said.
