On any of the 40 days after May 1, each of the residents in the city will have to answer 32 questions on their socio economic conditions including, caste.
The socio economic and caste census is likely to throw light on poverty in the city and the number of people belonging to each caste.
The exercise will cover more than 67 lakh residents in 426 sq km of the city's 15 zones. Even though blocks for the socio-economic and caste census will be the same as was in the second phase of Census 2011 conducted in February-March 2011, enumerators may also include information from new residents who have come from other parts of the country in the recent months.
A total of 3,410 enumerators accompanied with data entry operators will visit all houses in the city to record the socio economic data in a Tablet PC. On Friday, the consignment of 3,410 Tablet PC and other equipment for conducting the census in Chennai was distributed to 15 corporation zones of Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur.
The enumeration in 12,226 blocks in the city will be done by 3,410 enumerators and 574 supervisors, who will undergo training with the technical support of the Union government.
The Chennai Corporation has set up 64 ‘charge centres' in the city and will start the training programme on Monday for enumerators on how to collect socio economic data from residents with more focus on microscopic details of poverty in the city.
After collecting information, the operator will upload the data on a daily basis at the charge centre and the entire process of census will be available online.
The data will reflect poverty in the city with wide-ranging details of artisans, security guards, coolies, hawkers, beggars, cobblers, plumbers or rag-pickers.
