The 50 jubilee celebrations of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) in the city were as much about nostalgia, as about adapting to the changing scenario.

A travelling photo exhibition detailing momentous occasions from 50 years of KVS was inaugurated by Governor K. Rosaiah at Anna Unversity on Monday. Having started from Delhi, it is travelling to 14 Indian cities.

The panels of photographs detailed events such as the inauguration of KVs in places such as Ottapalam, Sikh Lines, Meerut, and Rae Bareli, opening of new regional offices, zonal institutes of education and training, and schools which have acquired accreditation from NABET.

Avinash Dikshit, commissioner, KVS, said they had grown from 20 regimental schools in 1963 to 1,100 schools, including three abroad, with more than 11 lakh students and 50,000 employees. However with time, it is natural that every organisation accumulates methods and practices which are no longer relevant, he said, speaking about adopting technology in classrooms.

“We have in the past few years tried to adopt technology in a big way to revolutionise teaching in our schools,” he said. He said they had a large number of e-classrooms and 10 per cent of the teacher force was engaged in developing e-content. “We hope to launch many more such initiatives in the near future,” he said.

N.R. Murali, deputy commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, regional office, Chennai, said two of the 44 schools in the region have 10 e-classrooms each and 20 other schools have set it up on their own. “The e-classroom project was started on a pilot basis last year. With its success, it is being extended to 300 schools this academic year, of which 5-6 are in this region,” he said.

Speaking about filling vacant teacher posts, Mr. Dixit said there were about 20 per cent vacancies, and these would be filled by March following a screening test and an interview.

M. Rajaram, V-C, Anna Unversity was also present at the occasion. The exhibition will be on till October 30.
