New system for conservancy inspectors and assistant executive engineers launched
As part of its efforts to improve and streamline garbage collection in the city, the Chennai Corporation has launched a new system for its conservancy inspectors and assistant executive engineers. Deputy Commissioner R.Anandakumar said that the over 200 CIs and 45 AEE will have to send text messages with details of garbage collection by compactors and by conservancy staff to a common mobile number.
“The mobile has been connected to a computer, which would generate the list of timings of each round of garbage clearance. Each of them has been given a particular code that would contain the zone number and route,” he explained to the audience at a session organised as part of day 2 of the ‘Municipalika' conference at the Chennai Trade centre on Tuesday. The system was introduced a week ago. The staff at the civic body's lorry sheds would also message the start and end time of each round of garbage collection. The CIs would send messages when the work in each of their wards commences and ends. They monitor door-to-door collection by tricycles and garbage collection by compactors. The AEEs would SMS the time of commencement and ending of vehicle route in the wards that they monitor.
Conservancy work for the morning shift begins by 7 a.m. and goes on till 2 p.m. In the afternoon shift from 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. in which only around 30 per cent of vehicles are put to use, places that need cleaning twice a day are covered, said an official source. The civic body also does night conservancy operations in market areas.

hi,i am mdfurkhan i request you to put a garbage on the streets in
opposite to 9/5 kumarappa street area:periamet chennai-600 003.i request
you to take a dust soon
Hi, as i welcome this new initiative from CC, what happened to earlier initiatives on garbage removal? It is very saddening ,that whenever we visit chennai,we see only filth, plastic waste, decomoposed food, urinating stinch across all roads except the residential areas of VIP's. Added to chaos, the metro work, flyover work, etc add to dust and making the city unlivable.unless there is constant momemtum and strong will to implement this tech initiatives, chennai would metro slum.the encroachments is a real problem, earlier it was only prominent shopping areas, now every main road , has roadside eateries and other shops who occupy spaces and add to chaos.the mayor of CC has to travel across all roads atleast once in a month,if he is loyal to the people who have voted to him.
The garbage collection is not regular. Houses similar to pigeon's nest wont have place to stock it but to throw it in road, as there is no enough bins too. Civic condition is too bad, condition is not better in previous corporation regime also. Same old story gets repeated. Instead of fighting for naming it as "singara" chennai or "Ezhilmigu" chennai, better canditate would be "Stinking" chennai.
It would be good, if the households are registered to the local
authority (say every ward) and they send out a SMS to the households
before starting the garbage collection, So that they can ensure that
they dump garbage just before collection. This way we will not have
Garbage being stagnated even for few hours. This way the resident can
keep a check that they are actually being collected.
some days before., i saw one article in the hindu that., some corporates are taking your garbage and in return they pay for you.. it will helpful for the chennai municipality cos people will start segregating the waste at the homes itself as degradable and non-degradable.. so the recycling things can be recycled and degradable to be dumped... Environment related departments experts should have detailed and vast study to implement for the city.. If mass education and photos, videos and graphics will make people to take action in saving the environment..
These garbage trucks are not closed or atleast do not use the doors. So once the garbage is collected from a place its thrown all over as the truck moves.
I suppose its a government truck, it doesn't have bar railings on either side(though the picture shows one side I assume the other side too don't have one).Bar railing below the carriage covering at least 50 percent of the tyres height is essential,it would prevent pedestrians or a two wheeler rider from entering below the truck in case of an accident. It should be made mandatory for all such trucks, its a small technique which will avoid big mishaps. concerned authorities please make a note and make it mandatory.
Will this be extended to zones that are recently attached to Chennai Corporation? We, the residents, belong to Ward188, Madipakkam which requires daily clearance of garbage, especially garbages accummulated in vacant plots.
Hi all, with tonnes of garbage availability in around Chennai. Coroporation may think of power plants modelling out from Singapore. This Singapore based power plant predominently use house hold garbage as fuel. But a system need to evolve for garbage collection & segregation at the power plant campus. If need more information. Please contact me.
The garbage situation in Chennai is at a very alarming condition. Hope the authorities concerned are serious enough in maintaining the procedures and standards that they are proposing , if not improve upon the same.
What if I start the truck, turn into next lane and do nothing and come back at 2 and Message back end time? The proper thing is to use GPS and do real time monitoring. Why cant our government use technology to render service to common man. We strongly need to Implement high end tech in all places where government and public meet, only then efficiency and transparency will be acheived.
It is nice and inspiring to see momentum in garbage collection. This solves the problems partially only. But the biggest challenge is street side vendors disposing garbage and worst garbages disposed in front of schools.
