Lack of response for smart cards for purchase of suburban tickets in Chennai Division has perplexed railway officials here.
Though the prepaid card system helps commuters to purchase suburban tickets without standing in queues, they are not interested in availing the facility. At present, smart cards are available for a value of Rs.80 with six months validity from the time of purchase with a refundable deposit of Rs.30 and 5 per cent extra value on the remaining Rs.50. Top-up facility in multiples of Rs.50 up to a maximum of Rs.2,000 is available.
According to a Southern Railway press release, the smart card can be used by anyone, unlike the season ticket which necessitates the holder to produce his/her identity as a support document. It is a cashless convenient service available throughout the day. It will take less than 5 seconds to get a ticket and it functions even during power failure.
So far, approximately 80,000 cards had been sold in the division and on an average 20,000 passengers travel daily using the facility.
The administration appealed to commuters to make use of the cards to travel at ease without the necessity to stand in the booking counters for purchase of ticket, according to a Southern Railway press release.
