The police arrested six young men who were involved in bike racing on Nungambakkam High Road on Sunday night. Of these, three had assaulted a traffic police inspector when he tried to nab them.

Nungambakkam traffic enforcement inspector Srinivasan said the bikers were caught during vehicle checks he was conducting along with his team on Nungambakkam High Road on Sunday around 9 p.m. “I saw a bike coming at high speed and it did not have a registration number. I stopped the vehicle and found that the driver’s name was Ummar (21). Khader, the pillion rider, ran way,” said Mr. Srinivasan.

The team also intercepted another bike driven by Ahmed (19). Augustine Arun (19) was riding pillion. “Another two bikes came right then. The drivers halted but then, escaped after pushing me down. My hands were injured and I lodged a complaint with the Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation wing,” said Mr. Srinivasan.

Traffic investigation officers interrogated the three bikers and found out that those who had pushed the police officer were from Pudupet. On Monday, they nabbed Khaja Moideen (20), Yasser Arafat (19) and Abbubakkar Siddiq (19). All the six have been remanded and the police are searching for Khader.

“During interrogation, they told us they were racing from Beach to Loyola College for a prize of Rs. 1,000,” said a traffic investigation officer.
