Six gangsters were arrested on Wednesday for the murder of a notorious gangster, M. Suresh, on Tuesday. Police said the arrested men were: S. Yuvaraj (26), S. Satish (23), M. Arun Kumar (23), A. Parthiban (23), G. Premnath (24) and J. Vigneshwaran (23). Vigneshwaran is also known as ‘Appu’ and ‘Citizen’.

All the men are from Tondiarpet, and are childhood friends, police said. They have been involved in several crimes including assault, kidnapping, extortion and theft.

On Tuesday, the six men accosted Suresh on Tiruvottiyur High Road and hacked him to death with sickles. Police said the motive was an old dispute between Suresh and Vigneshwaran.

“About a month ago, the two men fought over a petty issue that had cropped up in their neighbourhood. Vigneshwaran felt he had been humiliated by Suresh, and told his friends about the incident. The group then decided to murder Suresh,” said a police officer.

However, by then Suresh had been imprisoned by police, as part of a series of preventive measures to bring down crime in the area.

When the gang heard that Suresh was out on bail last week, they began to look for him in the places he frequented. They finally found him on TH Road, and killed him;

A case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been filed by New Washermenpet police.

All six have been sent to Puzhal prison.
