Six arrested for kidnap in Chennai

The Neelankarai police arrested six men who allegedly kidnapped a construction labourer for ransom.

The police said the victim, Jaffer (30) from Kolkata, who was working as a construction labourer at a site in Palavakkam, was befriended by three men on Sunday noon. The trio, claiming to be natives of Kolkata, soon after kidnapped Jaffer at knifepoint in an autorickshaw and took him to a house on MGR Salai, Kovilambakkam.

On Monday, Jaffer’s brother, Saddam, failing to get through to his brother’s phone, approached the mason at Jaffer’s workplace. They then contacted the Neelankarai police. Meanwhile, Saddam received a phone call from unidentified men who demanded Rs. 50,000 for Jaffer’s release.

On Monday night, an undercover team accompanied Saddam to Koot Road in Medavakkam, the location specified by the abductors. When two of the suspects approached Saddam, the police team rushed and detained the men who later led investigators to the house were Jaffer had been held. He was rescued.

The suspects, identified asTahir (24), Talaq Sheikh (23), Anarul (24), Shoufiq (25), Suman Sheikh (24) and Talal (30), all natives of West Bengal, were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday.
