Two women who attempted to rob an elderly couple, in whose house they were living as tenants till recently, were nabbed by residents in T.P. Chathiram on Tuesday night. The women – sisters Jennifer and Monika, both 35 years old, inflicted knife injuries on one resident, who tried to save the elderly couple.

The incident took place around 8.30 p.m. at the first floor home of Pattabiram (75), and his wife Nalina (65) on Gajapathi Street.

Two women, dressed in black clothes with their faces partially covered, entered the couple’s home under the pretext of making an enquiry about a person known to the couple.

As Nalina greeted them, the women overpowered her and tried to tie her to a chair. Pattabiram rushed in from the bedroom only to be attacked on his hand with a knife. The couple screamed for help and some young men playing cricket nearby rushed in.

At the sight of the young men, the women tried to escape, but were overpowered and handed over to T.P. Chathiram police. Jennifer, her husband Chandrasekar and Monika had lived on the second floor of the couple’s house and left six months ago after Chandrasekar died in a road accident.

The sisters, who have been arrested by T.P.Chathiram police, were in severe debt.
