Siruseri IT Park on OMR may be the city’s powerhouse of growth where several thousands of IT professionals work day and night but lacks in basic infrastructure, security, lighting and public transport.
The murder of a 23-year-old TCS employee in an isolated spot off First Main Road (Sipcot IT Park Road) has shocked IT companies and the police so much that they are now working out a plan to improve safety on the premises.
On Saturday evening itself, the deputy inspector-general of Kancheepuram convened a meeting of senior officials representing IT companies and told them to arrange safe escort for women employees travelling at night time.
The company representatives asked for police personnel to be posted inside the IT park to strengthen security.
Besides, the IT companies also came forward to sponsor a vehicle to patrol the IT park, spread over 1,000 acres, especially during the night, and agreed to install closed circuit television camera network.
When police officers said the IT park area must remain free from wild growth and lighting be enhanced with more streetlights and high-mast lamps at important locations, the company representatives initially refused to accede to the request. Maintenance and upkeep of the IT park area rested with Sipcot, they said. Later, the IT companies agreed to clear wild growth, including in the area abutting Sipcot site office.
They also consented to constructing a compound wall encompassing the Sipcot site office, the police said.
The companies also agreed to enhance lighting in public movement areas by installing more streetlights/high-mast lamps, after being convinced it would help enhance safety of the employees, particularly women, said officials.
According to the police, the TCS Siruseri facility alone accommodates over 20,000 IT professionals, an indication of the scale of security required in the IT park.
