Going by the opening line ‘Dil irunda modi paaru', one might mistake it for an “intro song” in a Vijay or Suriya film. However, no film hero or his paraphernalia will make an appearance, for this is a song to cheer sport heroes.

A grand trumpet introduces the song, soon giving way to an energetic voice that then catches up with attractive beats. All this in just 0.47 seconds. The piece is a jingle composed by singer Srinivas for the team 'Chennai Cheetahs', playing in the upcoming World Series Hockey. “This kind of song needs a lot of energy,” says Srinivas. It should evoke a sense of camaraderie and togetherness.

Music for the song was arranged by Krishna Chetan, in the voices of Suchith Suresan, Anand Aravindakshan and Nivas. “I did not want a ‘dappankuthu' for this, so tried something that would be catchy and at the same time, sound high-energy,” says Srinivas. The seamless transition from beats of four counts to three (Chatusram to Tisram in Carnatic music parlance) makes the short piece very appealing, in addition to providing a nice gradation in its tempo.

Srinivas adds: “India has a very rich history in Hockey. I remember the summer of 1980, when Baskaran led our team to victory at the Moscow Olympics. The game has had great players like Dhyan Chand. Well, it is still our national game, but sadly not popular enough. Through this jingle we want to sing out to people.”

While the catch phrase ‘Dil irunda modi paaru' was conceived by the team's media manager Laju Nanwani along with ad agency Aura, the rest of the lines in the track have been penned by Kavi Varman.

The World Series Hockey seeks to be the hockey variant of IPL, involving some of the leading players of the world.
