SilkAir launches Singapore to Chennai services

SilkAir, the regional wing of the Singapore Airlines has launched its daily services between Singapore and Chennai on Monday.

Talking to reporters about the new flight in the Singapore–Chennai sector, Chin Yau Seng, Chief Executive of SilkAir said flight number MI 432 will be operated on Tuesdays and Saturdays and it will depart from Singapore at 11.20 a.m. and will reach Chennai at 12.55 p.m. In the return direction flight number MI 431 will depart from Chennai at 1.45 p.m. and will reach Singapore at 8.35 p.m. (local time).

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays flight number MI 436 will leave Singapore at 1.45 p.m. and will reach Chennai at 3.30 p.m. In the return direction the flight MI 435 will leave Chennai at 4.15 p.m. and will reach Singapore at 10.45 p.m. (local time), he said.

Promotional fares

Talking about the ticket rates, Mr. Seng said the airline has introduced a promotional all inclusive economy return fare of Rs.14,000. The offer is valid till the end of this month. “Depending upon the demand we will decide on whether to extend the promotional fare or not,” Mr. Seng said.

The airline will operate Airbus A-319 and Airbus A-320 aircraft in the Singapore–Chennai sector. The airline already has six Airbus A-319 aircraft and 11 Airbus A-320 aircraft. The airlines operated an Airbus A-320 aircraft on the inaugural day, which has a seating capacity of 150 persons. Three fourth of the total seats in the airline has been filled on that day, he said.

The airline is operating to six destinations in South India, which included Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai is the sixth destination. SilkAir is the only airline which is operating a service between Coimbatore and Singapore.

The passenger traffic is growing steadily since the introduction of this flight in 2007, Mr. Seng added.
