SHRC seeks report on custodial death

Days after a man died in police custody at Neelankarai near here, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report about the incident and sought a detailed report.

SHRC member D. Jayachandran has directed the Director General of Police/Director, Investigation Wing of the SHRC to submit a report within four weeks.

According to a media report, a 28-year-old man died in custody at the Neelankarai police station when he was being interrogated for suspected involvement in thefts. He was identified as V. Anthony, a resident of Tsunami Quarters in Kannagi Nagar.

He was taken into custody last Thursday along with another suspect. The police claimed he complained of uneasiness and was taken to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. A judicial magistrate inquiry has also been ordered.
