After a relatively hot day, the city received showers from afternoon on Friday.
The maximum temperature of 35.2 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam and 34.7 degree Celsius in Meenambakkam was one degree Celsius above the average temperature. While the city received 8.4 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m., the observatory in Meenambakkam did not receive any rainfall. The showers in the evening posed problems for motorists as it had resulted in water stagnating on many arterial roads, affecting the flow of traffic. Several motorists said it is time the agencies concerned took immediate measures to prevent water stagnation.
During the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Friday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered 24.5 mm and 35.8 mm of rainfall. The city reservoirs too had their share of showers. While Cholavaram reservoir received 80 mm of rainfall, the one in Red Hills got 49 mm. The reservoirs in Poondi and Chembarambakkam registered 23 mm and 13 mm rainfall respectively.
According to Meteorological Department officials, convective clouds brought rainfall to the city. The moisture incursion owing to active south west monsoon in neighbouring States was also behind the showers.
Chennai has received 231 mm of rainfall against the normal of 158 mm in the two months since June 1. According to the department, rain or thundershower may occur in the city on Saturday.
