After a brief lull in the northeast monsoon, the city received heavy rain on Sunday night.
According to the Meteorological Department, Nungambakkam recorded 52 mm of rainfall at 11 p.m. on Sunday and Meenambakkam 18.2 mm. The intense rainfall led to waterlogging on roads, disrupted traffic and exposed lacunae in civic infrastructure in several localities. Met officials said heavy rainfall is likely to continue at isolated places over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Sunday though began on a sedate note with the skies remaining cloudy for most part of the day. It was towards the evening that the city began receiving intense rainfall. As of 8.30 p.m, the rainfall recorded in Nungambakkam was 22.2 mm while Meenambakkam had received 0.3 mm.
Many of the city roads, including arterial stretches such as Poonamalee High Road, were waterlogged. Some of the interior roads in localities, such as Chintadirpet and Kilpauk, were also heavily inundated after the sharp showers.
Chennai Collectorate officials said a decision on declaring a holiday for schools and colleges would be made only on early Monday morning after assessing the quantum of rainfall in each area.
Chennai Corporation officials said just three complaints were received on the helpline 1913.
The control room received six complaints on water stagnation.
Residents are requested to call 044-2536 7823, 2538 4965, 2538 3694 for any rain-related assistance from the Corporation.
Meanwhile, Met officials said parts of interior and south Tamil Nadu may receive isolated rainfall.
For the next 48 hours, the sky condition is likely to be overcast. A few spells of rain or thundershowers are likely to occur. The maximum and minimum temperature is likely to be around 28 and 24 degree Celsius respectively.
