Sudden heavy rains in the suburbs on Tuesday evening took the city by surprise.

Accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightening, the unexpected showers uprooted several trees along the median on Grand Southern Trunk Road between Vandalur and Guduvanchery on Tuesday night.

Traffic came to a standstill for a short while between Vandalur and Guduvanchery. However, workers contracted by the National Highways Authority of India were soon brought in, and worked overtime to clear the debris.

There was no rain anywhere in Tambaram or the southern suburbs of the city at the time, but it was pleasantly cool.

For residents wilting under temperatures close to 43 degree Celsius of late, the overcast sky was a welcome relief. Pleasant weather prevailed all through Tuesday in suburbs beyond Tambaram — between Vandalur and Singaperumal Koil.
