Sewer worker dies after asphyxiating while setting up sewer cleaning machine

Iraniappan, 26, a sewer worker working for a contract firm to Pallavaram Municipality, while trying to clear a block in a sewer line in Keelkattlai, died of asphyxiation on Friday.Police said he felt unconscious while setting up the sewer machine for cleaning and fell into the manhole. He was asphyxiated and was taken to a government hospital in Chromepet where he was declared brought dead.

Pallavaram police arrested the supervisor, Marimuthu, 26, for causing the death of the worker by negligence. The Municipal officials said they have provided the guidelines for the workers through the contract firm. "We are in touch with the contract firm in allowing suitable compensation for the dead worker," an official said.
