Seven students of DD Medical College, Tiruvallur fainted on Wednesday, the third day of their hunger strike on the campus of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The students have been fasting since Monday, demanding a meeting with the Chief Minister.

The fast was begun, as a sit-in protest by 52 students of the college on the university’s campus since August 21, did not lead to any action.

When the women students fainted, nearby 108 ambulances were called and the students were taken to Government Royapettah Hospital for treatment. Of the seven, two were admitted to the intensive care unit, other students said.

“No official has come to meet us since we began the hunger strike. But we have decided to continue our fast and the girls who fainted will join us once they are better. We want to meet the Chief Minister to put forward our plea to continue our medical education,” said a student.

The Medical Council of India derecognised DD Medical College in 2011. The students want the State government to take it over so that they can complete their medical education.
