The web is flooded with apps of all kinds, but what does one do if one’s phone does not have an internet connection?
To address precisely this need, a tech company on Thursday launched a service that will enable students to access information via a text message.
The service provided by txtWeb does not require a smartphone or a data connection, according to Srividya Ramanathan, business head of the company. “All the user has to do is send an SMS to 51115 and she will be offered a range of topics to browse. We have taken special care to ensure the user is given only what she has asked for.”
The apps for the service have been developed by software engineers across the country and are offered as a suite for users. “The users will be given keywords, using which they can ask for board exam questions, JEE questions, UPSC questions, bank exam preparation material, news, cricket scores or even social media updates,” Ms. Ramanathan said.
As of now, the company has partnered with Airtel, Vodafone, Tata Docomo and Idea, and will soon extend its facilities for other users. “The service will be helpful for students, particularly those from rural areas who have limited access to the internet,” Ms. Ramanathan added.
