Film director and Naam Tamilar leader Seeman was arrested along with 13 of his supporters at Chepauk here on Monday night.

He was produced before a judge and remanded to judicial custody.

According to police sources, a case was registered against Mr. Seeman by the North Beach police for making an inflammatory speech on Saturday at a demonstration organised to condemn the attack on Tamil fishermen, allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Mr. Seeman was charged under the provisions of Section 153 (A) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) of the IPC.

A special team of the Chennai police formed to investigate the case apprehended him near Chepauk. Thirteen functionaries of the Naam Tamilar movement were also arrested.

While Mr. Seeman has been lodged in Vellore central prison, others have been taken to the central prison at Cuddalore, the sources added.
