Work on the second desalination plant coming up at Nemmeli along East Coast Road is almost complete.

Minister for municipal administration and rural development K.P. Munusamy reviewed the work at the plant, which will have a capacity to treat 100 million litres a day. He inspected the work to lay a pipeline beneath the MRTS station in Velachery and across Buckingham canal near Sholinganallur. These works would be over by mid-December.

The project to carry treated water through a pipeline running for a distance of 64.37 km is nearing completion. Of the total distance, the pipeline has been laid for a distance of 64.08 km. The remaining stretch would be covered by this month, he said. Bridges have been constructed above the pipelines in areas such as Kelambakkam, Muttukadu and Kovalam.

The minister instructed officials to expedite the work on the project to facilitate drinking water supply to the city’s residents.
