Schools told to resume admissions

Two months after it issued directions to managements of matriculation schools asking them not to issue application forms for new admissions until mid-May, the School Education Department has revoked the order.

A few school heads confirmed to The Hindu that they received fresh directions on Monday to resume the admission process. They added that many schools would be starting the admission process from Thursday.

At a meeting of school principals convened here on Wednesday, S. Tamilmani, Inspector of Matriculation Schools, said schools could resume issuing application forms and other procedures to admit new students. However, there was no announcement on the fee structure that could be levied, sources said.

Many schools had resented the directive as it disturbs the entire academic calendar where decision on the number of textbooks, infrastructure and other amenities are taken depending on the intake.

Sources in the School Education department said the schools have also been directed not to collect fee until further orders.

“We are surprised by the turn of events. However, ambiguity about the fee structure would continue as no decision has been taken,” said B. Purushothaman, Principal, Everwin Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

N. Vijayan, General Secretary, Federation of Matriculation Schools’ Associations in Tamil Nadu, said it is a great relief for parents who had postponed summer plans wondering which school their child would get admission.

However, for many private schools, the Department’s decision to revoke its direction has not come as a surprise. Many had started the admission process silently. Some school managements criticised that not bringing any clarity into the fee structure was unfair as parents would demand to know that before enrolling their children. “Along with textbooks they pay their first-term fee. What do we tell the parents,” asked a school principal.

Question papers for the practical examinations for Class XII to be conducted between February 22 and 26 were also handed to schools by the district education officers at the meeting of principals.
