Schools in Chennai will be shut on Thursday owing to widespread rain. A statement from Chennai district Collector V. Anbuselvan said that since showers had continued through Wednesday and heavy rain was expected on Thursday, schools had been asked to stay shut.

Furthermore, heads of schools in the city have been asked to ensure there is no stagnation of water on the premises, as well as around the institution. “The heads of all government, matriculation and CBSE school should ensure that the provisions on the school campus for rainwater to drain away are effectively maintained and monitored. Schools should additionally ensure there is no overflow and mixing of sewage with stagnant rainwater which can put the children at a risk,” a statement from the Collector said.

To check if schools have implemented infrastructural changes to prevent water stagnation, inspections will be carried out by a team of officials from the School Education department and Public health department.
