Pointing out the need for a change in the education structure in schools, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former governor of West Bengal, said that traditional schools need to rethink their grading systems. “All schools should have a measure of judging a child’s progress, but the traditional exams are not enough,” he said, speaking at the launch of the book ‘The Indian Education Trust, A tale of two schools’ by Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy, here on Monday.
In the book, Mr. Krishnamoorthy traces the history of the Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar founded in 1970, and the Sri Sankara Vidyashramam Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thiruvanmiyur, founded in 1989.
Both schools are being run by the Indian Educational Trust, which was formed in 1972, and were inspired by the Paramacharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Speaking about the schools, managing trustee, N. Kumar, said, “Through the years, we have laid an emphasis on ethics. While the teaching methods have become more modern, the inherent values we would like to impart to the students remain the same.”
Historian V. Sriram, N. Sankar, chairman of the trust, and Lakshmi Vijayakumar, founder, Sneha Suicide helpline, were also present.
