Sixteen schools from across the city participated.
The Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association, Mandaveli unit, recently held the 21 inter-school bhajan competition, coinciding with the association’s 28 annual day celebrations. Sixteen schools from across the city participated in the event, which was held at the Narayani Ammal Kalyana Mandapam, Mandaveli. Pudukottai K. Rajagopalan, Neela Ravichandran, and Manikkudi Chandrasekaran were the panel of judges. Students rendered bhajans on Krishna, Ayappan, Guruvandana, and Hanuman. It was a mix of classical and folk.
“Each year the schools come up with new songs and it a pleasure to listen to them. I started the association as my post-retirement project and it has come a long way since then. When we first started the completion, only five schools participated, over the years the number has gone up,” said K.R. Srinivasan, president of the Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association. Of the 16, first four teams went away with trophies and other gift articles. The first prize, which is a rolling trophy called N.K. Mahadeva Iyer Memorial award, was won by Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar. They received the Seshammal Centenary Memorial Award and a music instrument as Sri Annaswamy Iyer Memorial Award. The school was also presented a Thanjavur Tambura.
The second prize went to Sri Sankara Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, East Tambaram. The school received the Hamsadhwani Sri R. Ramachandran Memorial Award and Sri Annaswamy Iyer Memorial Award. They were presented with a tabla set. The third prize went to P.S.B.B. Senior Sec. School, Nungambakkam. The school got Suniti L. Narayanan Memorial Award and Sri Annaswami Iyer Memorial Award. They were presented with a dolki. The fourth prize went to Sri Sankara Vidyashramam Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kamaraj Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur. They received the Sri Srinivasa Raghavan Memorial Award and Sri Annaswami Iyer Memorial Award. They were also presented with a dolki. Special prizes were given for Best Guruvandana song, which went to Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar. They received a shield instituted in the name of Thasildar Sri Viswanatha Iyer. Best Krishna song went to Sri Sankara Senior Sec. School, Adyar. They received the Sri N.K. Rangachariar Memorial Award. Award for best Ayyapa song went to The Hindu Senior Sec. School, Indira Nagar. They received the Smt. Chellammal Rangachariar Memorial award.
All winners and teachers leading the team also received gift articles and individual cups. The losers did not go empty handed either. Prizes were awarded to first ten positions and consolation prizes were given to the remaining.
A ‘pride of honour award’ was bestowed on Viswavidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, which won the bhajan competition last year. The award consists of a shield, musical instrument, individual cups and gift articles. All musical instruments were sponsored by A. Venkatraman. The day-long programme was inaugurated by S. Sankaran, and the chief guest was S. Santhanam, chairman, Sattva Business Group. Chartered Accountant G. Narayanaswamy was the guest of honour.
