Scant regard for walkers’ safety?

They have demaned a pedestrian signal at the busy intersection of GST Road and Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road

Despite the fact that the intersection of Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and Vandalur Kelambakkam Road witnesses considerable traffic movement and is bustling for most part of the day, a pedestrian signal has not been installed there.

The signals at the junction are aimed only at regulating vehicular traffic.

Due to the lack of a pedestrian signal, pedestrians darting across the stretch to evade vehicles is a common sight.

“There is a constant flow of vehicaular traffic, including heavy vehicles, on the stretch. Motorists from western side of GST Road block the walkway while entering Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road. Similarly, it is also dangerous to cross near the main entrance of Vandalur Zoo as vehicles proceeding towards Tambaram, from Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road, come at high speed,” said K. Manickam, a pedestrian.

When contacted, the Kancheepuram district police officials said, “Steps will be taken to create a pedestrian signal at the intersection.”
