SC remarks hailed

DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Monday described the Supreme Court order striking down the appointment of Bhavani Singh as the public prosecutor in the disproportionate case against former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa as “the biggest victory” for his party.

“It is not just a first victory, but also the biggest victory for the DMK,” he told reporters here.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the excitement of the DMK was quite natural as it had been waiting for justice for a long time. He, however, clarified that he was not aware of the direction of the Supreme Court that the judgment on the Karnataka High Court in the case should be delivered by May 12.

PMK leader S. Ramadoss said the remarks of the Supreme Court judges on the appointment of Mr. Singh were very important and Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam should take responsibility and quit office.

Recalling Mr. Panneerselvam’s declaration in the Assembly that Ms. Jayalalithaa would once again occupy the Chief Minister seat, he said it was nothing but an attempt to bend the law.

TMC leader G.K. Vasan said Tamil Nadu should not have appointed the special public prosecutor especially after the case was transferred to the Karnataka High Court

“The moment it was transferred, the responsibility of the case vested with the Karnataka government. The order of the Supreme Court should be viewed without any political prejudices,” he said.

Welcoming the Supreme Court verdict, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said the remarks in the judgment were like whiplashes on corrupt politicians. “It gives hope that justice will prevail and those corrupt in public life can’t bend the rule of law,” he said.
