In a bid to promote energy conservation and help customers bring down their electricity bills, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has teamed up with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a company operating under the Ministry of Power, to offer energy-efficient electrical appliances including LED bulbs, tube lights and five-star rated fans at its local offices.

As part of the agreement, independent kiosks would be opened in collection centres of Tangedco offices across the city.

Star-rated appliances are benchmarked to be energy-efficient as per their ratings. An official of the Electrical Inspectorate Department, which promotes the use of energy-efficient appliances, said that any electrical appliance with a star rating would help in reducing power consumption.

“The higher the star rating, the higher the energy-efficiency. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has fixed five-star as the highest benchmark for energy efficiency.”

Kiosks open

A senior official of Tangedco said that separate kiosks Kiosks selling energy-efficient LED bulbs have been launched on the premises of some Tangedco collection centres in the Chennai region. In a letter, the Chief Engineer (Demand Side Management) has requested the Chief Engineer of South and North regions to make provisions in the collection centres for the opening of kiosks, which would operate from 8.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

The sales centres would sell LED bulbs (9-Watt), LED tube lights (20-Watt) and five-star rated fans to consumers. While LED bulbs with a warranty period of three years have been priced at ₹65 each, LED tube lights are priced at ₹230 and fans at ₹1,150.

However, at present, only LED bulbs are being sold and it would take some time before tube lights and fans are made available, the official said.

Two distribution agents, namely Nextcell and Kishan Infrastructure Industries, have been appointed to sell these energy-efficient electrical appliances, he added.
