Sand lorry operators in the city launched an indefinite strike on Wednesday protesting against overloading in the stockyards and levying of hefty fine.
On Wednesday, nearly 1,100 lorries that transport sand to Chennai and its surroundings, were stationed at Vanagaram and Madurantakam.
The strike is likely to hit supply of sand for construction activites. On an average, nearly 5,000 loads of sand are being transported from Arcot, Villupuram and Jayankondam to the city.
Members of the Tamil Nadu State Sand Lorry Owners Federation met officials of the Transport Department, Water Resources Department and also Collectors of various districts. “We have also sought action against government officials who insist on overloading the vehicles,” said S. Yuvaraj, the federation president.
Talks fail
However, the federation has decided to continue the strike as the talks failed.
As per the government order, six-wheelers can load up to two units, which translate to 10 tonnes of sand, and 10-wheelers can carry three units or 16 tonnes of sand. But trucks are forced to carry up to five units of sand and billed for lesser amount, members alleged.
