Safety regulations for coaches

July 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Transportation Branch of Southern Railway has issued fresh instructions to ensure the safety of coaches and to prevent incidents of trains rolling on their own, in the wake of a derailment of an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) at Arakkonam in Vellore district recently.

In a letter addressed to the Divisional Railway Managers, it said motormen should ensure that trains are halted only at the designated spots.

Further, traffic staff should be present whenever an EMU or other trains – Mainline EMU (MEMU), Diesel EMU (DEMU) — are brought for stabling (halted for a long time).

Later, metal skids (instruments to prevent movement of wheels) should be placed below the outermost wheel to prevent them from rolling down on the track.

The development comes after a protest by railway employees earlier this week after three of their colleagues were suspended in connection with the derailment of the EMU in Arakkonam on July 11.
