Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Sunday called upon art foundations and sabhas to act as a catalyst in creating a bridge between tradition and modernity.

Inaugurating Brahma Gana Sabha’s December Art Festival at Smt. Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium here, he called for the preservation of the purity of the arts while welcoming new ideas and combinations.

Congratulating the Sabha for its contribution towards the promotion of art and culture, the Governor appreciated its initiatives in conducting music programmes every month. The Governor, who spoke a few words in Tamil, said only after he came to the State did he realise the richness of Tamil language and culture.

Mr. Purohit conferred the titles of Gaana Padhmam on vocalist and mridangam vidwan T.V. Gopalakrishnan, Vaadhya Padhmam on violinist D. Chandrasekaran, Naatya Padhmam on Bharathanatyam exponent Nandini Ramani and Naataka Padhmam on B.M. Purushothaman (Augusto). He launched a new logo for the Sabha and released Nalli Music Season Ready Reckoner book. Sabha president and industrialist Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti said he looked forward to Mr. Purohit’s able guidance in matters pertaining to the arts and culture. Mridangam vidwan Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman and dancer and executive committee member of Kalakshetra Foundation Urmila Sathyanarayana offered felicitations.
