NAMI, the Russian State Scientific Research Center, is scouting for potential joint ventures and joint research with Indian firms in the automotive space. “We have tie-ups with several countries and in that big list, we want to add India,” Alexey S Terenchenko, head of the power units centre, NAMI, told The Hindu . “We will explore and identify the areas where we want to collaborate. We are also open to R&D tie-ups with universities,” he added.

Mr. Terenchenko has come to Chennai along with a high-level delegation from NAMI, including Evgenii Barykin, head of the industrialisation centre; Mikhail Zlenko, head of the engine department; Nadarajah Ganasenthan, process engineer; Pavel Kuftyrev, head of the construction and technology department; Vsevolod Smirnov, procurement specialist; and Alexander N. Lyskov, director of the automobile and power train department. The team flew down to Chennai at the invitation of the Indo-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industries and will be participating in the “Automotive Engineering Show” that will be held at the Chennai Trade Centre.

Over the next few days, the delegation will be meeting auto and auto component companies in Tamil Nadu, including Sundaram Fasteners Limited and TVS Motor Company Limited. More than 15 companies are expected to meet this team.

“We do a lot of research on alternative energy and fuels for engines from across the globe. We can help Indian firms in this field and there are possibilities for a wide range of collaborations here,” Mr. Zlenko said.

The institute developed the first technical regulations — ‘On requirements for emissions of harmful (polluting) substances by vehicles in circulation on the territory of the Russian Federation’ — approved by the government.

Pioneering institute

The research centre, established in 1918, was the first research and development institute in the sphere of automotive theory and technologies. The institute has made significant contributions to the development of Russian automobile and tractor engineering and automobile and aircraft engine engineering.
