Under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor scheme
The State government on Monday issued an order releasing a sum of Rs.6.1 crore to nine town panchayats under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme.
The release of funds was towards the second and third instalment of the share of the State and Union governments.
Mangadu, Thiruneermalai (both in Kancheepuram district) and Minjur (Tiruvallur) are among the urban local bodies. The other six town panchayats are located in Madurai and Coimbatore districts.
Mangadu, Thiruneermalai and Minjur are getting the third instalment of funds. Mangadu has been given about Rs.59 lakh; Thiruneermalai Rs.78 lakh and Minjur Rs. 57 lakh.
In March 2007, the first instalment of Rs.194.4 lakh was released to the three town panchayats. Two years later, the second instalment was issued.
The figures of total project cost for Mangadu, Thiruneermalai and Minjur are about Rs.2.52 crore, Rs.3.45 crore and Rs.2.43 crore respectively.
The BSUP is an important Sub-Mission under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). It is implemented in Town Panchayats coming under the Chennai Metropolitan Area, besides Coimbatore and Madurai.
It aims at the integrated development of housing and slum infrastructure such as water supply, sewerage, drainage, storm water drain, streetlights in slums in the identified cities.
It also concentrates on the development of socio-economic activities for slum dwellers, such as construction of multipurpose community Kendra and childcare centre.
