A better technology will enable re-laying of the stretch with cement concrete without disrupting traffic for too long

The Chennai Corporation has decided to use an alternative technology that will enable laying of concrete roads without disrupting traffic.   

The Corporation Council on Thursday approved the use of slip form/fixed form concrete pavers in re-laying some roads to expedite the work without disrupting traffic in the area. The Council also approved Rs. 9.9 crore for the integrated development of Harrington Road, which is one of the roads used by thousands of vehicles travelling to the western suburbs from the city every day.

Formation of potholes due to the rains has been one of the causes of traffic disruption and congestion in Chetpet area and arterial stretches such as Poonamalle High Road. The concretisation of the stretch is expected to ease rush hour traffic congestion on many adjoining roads as well.

The other works to be taken up on the road include laying of granite footpaths, construction of stormwater drain and granite road median, and development of greenery and ducts for electrical cables and utilities. Depending on the success of the project, works on more roads are likely to be taken up.

Mayor Saidai Duraisamy on Thursday also announced the use of M60 grade of concrete to re-lay 100 bus routes and reduce the period of traffic diversions to 48 hours. As many as 69 bus routes that can be diverted to alternative routes will be re-laid using a lesser grade of concrete (M40) to save funds. The same grade of concrete will be used to develop 1,125 interior roads.
