Burglars broke into a house in Valsaravakkam and made off with Rs. 16 lakh on Tuesday night.

According to police, the house belongs to Harish Babu (41), who runs an electrical and hardware shop in Amnjikarai.

Two days ago, Babu and his family left for Tirupathi on a pilgrimage. On Wednesday, they returned at 5.30 p.m. and found the lock broken and the front door open. When they went inside, they found the almirah broken.

There had been two lockers in the almirah, and the burglars had removed the one containing Rs. 16 lakh and taken it away. The clothes in the almirah were intact. Babu immediately lodged a complaint with the Valsaravakkam police.

Police suspect the crime was committed by someone known to the family. Forensic experts were brought in to lift finger prints. A case has been registered and an investigation is on.
