Angry commuters entered into a verbal duel with Railway Protection Force personnel after one of them allegedly assaulted an elderly passenger which left him bleeding at the Chetpet railway station on Monday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, the passenger, aged around 65 years, was lying on the steps of the foot overbridge leading to the suburban platform. Around 6.30 p.m., an RPF constable asked him to leave the spot. When the passenger did not, the RPF constable Sudheer, had reportedly used his lathi, they said.

Noticing this, commuters travelling towards Tambaram and Chennai Beach got down at the station and came to the aid of the elderly passenger.

Railway sources said they had obtained a statement from the eyewitnesses and would make a thorough investigation into the incident.
