The second phase of counselling for seats in government medical colleges, the State-run dental college and government quota seats in self-financing medical and dental colleges will be held from August 5 to August 16.

In the first round of counselling which began on July 18, a total of 1,823 seats were filled. Though Madras medical college, Mohan Kumaramangalam medical college, Salem, Stanley and Tiruvannamalai medical colleges had been permitted to add more seats, they had not got a formal approval.
Last week, the medical council of India granted approval for 85 more seats for MMC. Stanley was allowed to increase the number of seats by 100 as was Tiruvannamalai medical college. Salem medical college was permitted to add 25 seats. Thus, the government medical colleges got 310 seats of which 264 seats are available in the government quota.
An official of the directorate of medical education said the number of vacancies available currently in all the government and self-financing colleges had not been put up on the website as the situation was “fluid”.
As several private colleges had gone to court and the decisions were awaited, the seat position would be available only two days prior to counselling, the official said.
Since ESI medical college had also been granted permission to admit students, officials said they were unable to arrive at the exact numbers, especially of seats available under self-financing quota. According to an estimate, the State may lose more than 100 seats of the 838 surrendered by self-financing colleges to the government pool.
