The Chennai Corporation on Thursday raided trains and seized 2,200 kg of rotten meat being smuggled into the city.
The unhygienic meat from rotting carcasses was seized from parcels transported in Circar Express. The consignment was identified by the civic body’s health department officials around 6.30 a.m. at Egmore railway station.
The meat was not certified by a veterinary surgeon of an authorised slaughterhouse. A total of eleven such consignments were destroyed by the civic body officials.
The civic body has seized 21 tonnes of rotten meat so far. Business units belonging to six traders who smuggled the rotten meat have been sealed. The raids began in September 2012.
The samples of the meat products were sent for laboratory assessment of microbial count.
The Chennai Corporation will intensify raids in the coming days and has warned traders against dealing in illegal trade.
The Chennai Corporation will cancel trade licences of traders and hotels found to use illegal meat products.
