The Rotary Club of Madras, T. Nagar conferred awards for the year 2013-2014 on three persons from different walks of life, including tennis player Anand Amritraj here on Monday.
Mr. Anand Amritraj was conferred the lifetime achievement award. R. Chandrasekaran, executive vice-chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions received the ‘for the sake of honour award’ and golf coach lieutenant colonel (retired) C.V. Prathap won the vocational excellence award.
Speaking at the award function, district governor of Rotary A.P. Khanna outlined the various programmes of the club. He said that the club had spent Rs. 21,000 crore for polio eradication. “India will be declared polio-free soon,” he said. He also lauded the eye camps conducted by Dr. Rajan of Rajan Eye Care Hospital.
Anand Amritraj recalled how he became a tennis player and the other awardees too spoke on the occasion. Former tennis player Vijay Amritaraj, on behalf of the Vijay Amritaraj foundation, donated $ 10,000 to the Rotary Club.
