Rollback service tax for actors: Vijay writes to Modi

He said that many production companies were abandoning the business due to heavy losses

June 20, 2014 01:33 pm | Updated 01:33 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Actor Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking the BJP government to repeal the service tax on actors, saying the tax, levied by the previous UPA government, had harmed the film industry immensely.

In the letter, a copy of which was released to the media, Mr. Vijay said the film industry’s growth was affected because of the 12.5 per cent service tax. He noted that several prominent film production companies and producers were moving away from the film business because of heavy losses.

He requested Mr. Modi to exempt the industry from service tax and ensure its “rebirth”. The actor also pointed out that prominent film industry personalities including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and others had already voiced their opposition to the tax.

The actor, who met Mr. Modi during the latter’s election campaign in the State, also congratulated him on becoming Prime Minister.
