Three of the 16 assembly constituencies in Chennai district have recorded a dip in the number of electors following deletion of many names during the special summary revision of electoral rolls in 2013.
The number has reduced even after 1.53 lakh applications were received from electors in the 16 constituencies from October 1 to November 20, 2012. Over 1.46 lakh of the claimants were found to be eligible for inclusion in the rolls.
However, as many as 83,510 names of electors on the rolls have been deleted in the 16 assembly constituencies, based on a household survey conducted by booth-level officers.
Of the names deleted in the district, 44,975 were of men. The names of women, which were deleted, numbered 38,527.
The Chennai district election office attributed the dip in the number to intense field verification by officials who identified large number of multiple entries in the rolls of some constituencies.
Many deceased residents were also found to be on the rolls. Such names were deleted this time.
This led to the dip in the number of electors from the assembly constituencies of Dr. Radhakrishna Nagar (from 2,12,224 to 2,11,581), Perambur (from 2,53,149 to 2,46,525 lakh) and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar (from 1,98,186 to 1,98,102 lakh).
According to a press release by the district election officer and corporation commissioner Vikram Kapur on Thursday, the total number of electors in Chennai district has increased to 34.20 lakh after the special summary revision in 2013.
The number of electors on the draft electoral rolls published on October 1, 2012 for the 16 constituencies in Chennai district was 33.57 lakh. Velachery (2.47 lakh) has emerged as the assembly constituency with the largest number of electors in Chennai district after the special summary revision.
Perambur has lost the top position among the 16 assembly constituencies on account of the deletion of a large number of electors in many of its localities.
Following the publishing of the draft electoral rolls of the 16 assembly constituencies, the net inclusion of electors is 63,042.
The electors’ photo identity cards for electors who are 18 and 19 years of age will be distributed on National Voters’ Day, observed on January 25, at the designated centres.
