Roads to avoid as top leaders hit the campaign trail

May 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - CHENNAI:

The police have ruled out major traffic snarls on Friday, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit the city to campaign for BJP candidates.

However, it is advisable to avoid Anna Salai and GST Road (up to the Airport) at certain hours of the day.

PM’s route

The Prime Minister will arrive at the airport around 7 p.m. and reach YMCA Grounds in Nandanam around 7.20 p.m.

“He is expected to be there for around 45 minutes and then head back to the airport. The route he will be taking is simple and direct,” said a senior police officer.

As he is not travelling to any other part of the city, the police have not planned any traffic diversions.

“Vehicle movement will be blocked for some time when he is travelling to and from the venue. Also, there will be some restrictions while he is addressing the people gathered at the YMCA,” said another officer.

Therefore, police sources said, it was better to avoid Anna Salai and adjoining stretches during the PM’s visit.

CM’s plan

Chief minister Jayalalithaa’s campaign in North Chennai is also expected to create some traffic blocks in some localities.

Her campaign starts at 5 p.m. and is expected to go on till around 7 p.m.

She starts at Royapuram and passes though places like M.S. Koil street, S.N. Chetty Street, Jeevaratinam Road junction, Tiruvottiyur High Road, Vaidyanathan Bridge, Ennore High Road, Sunambu Kalvai and Manali Road.

“It is better to avoid Tiruvottiyur High Road, S. N. Chetty Road, Manali High Road, Sunambu Kalvai. It is difficulty to choose alternative routes as the area is narrow. It is better to use train services,” said a police source.

DMK on the move

Meanwhile, DMK leader M. Karunanidhi will also be campaigning on Friday.

He is expected to travel through Chepauk, Thousand Lights, Anna Nagar, Madhuravoyal, Ambattur, Avadi and Poonamalee.

“It is better to avoid Triplicane, Dams Road, M.M.D.A colony and Ambattur Estate bus stand,” said a police officer.

Though the police have not made any elaborate traffic plans, policemen will be deployed to ensure that there is no inconvenience to the public.

The PM will arrive at the airport around 7 p.m. and reach Nandanam around 7.20 p.m.
