Road-level transformers shock residents

May 12, 2014 10:02 am | Updated 10:03 am IST - CHENNAI:

When roads were paved and a stormwater drain network constructed a year ago at Nehru Nagar Industrial area, Perungudi, there was much rejoicing.

Owners of units there, who had long been suffering from water logging, were relieved. However, a member of the Nehru Nagar-Perungudi Industries Association said they never thought the work would bring in woes of a new kind — electricity transformers at near or sub-road levels in the area.

Industrialists fear that several distribution transformers in the industrial area are below the road level and could be a grave risk to passers-by.

Suresh, who runs a factory in the locality, complained that the officials of Tangedco have failed to increase the height of the transformers in accordance with the new roads. The industrial area with several micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) until recently had poor road facilities and an inadequate stormwater drain network, leading to flooding.

The association has also requested Tangedco to convert overhead cables to underground ones.
