The road laying work on 57th Street, Periyar Nagar, Korattur, which began during last week has put the residents and bus commuters to unnecessary hassles.
Loads of gravel was spread over the entire width of the road thus blocking the traffic from Railway station and nearby Venkatraman Nagar.
A woman commuter V. Saroja said, “We are not against this development work. Instead of taking up the entire stretch, they should have taken up one-half of the road and allowed at least bus traffic on the other side of the road. The other vehicles could be diverted via 49th Street to reach 31 Street, the main thoroughfare and to reach other parts of Korattur.”
“Metrowater is yet to complete the construction of manhole at the entrance of the road from North Avenue. But the road laying work has begun,” said D. Venkatachalam, a resident of Venkataraman Nagar.
It was seen on Tuesday that workers were engaged in clearing silt from a manhole in the middle of the road on the 57th Street, Periyar Nagar, and bailing out buckets of sewage and poured it on the partly-laid road.

Residents said that it was an eyesore and health hazard.
The recent spell of rain may have cooled off the city, but it has also taken a toll on the roads, particularly in the suburbs.
Intermittent showers
These intermittent showers however, have spelt woes for residents. B. Thomas, a resident of Korattur, said several roads, including East Avenue, Central Avenue, and North Avenue , have become inaccessible after the rains.
“The roads were dug up to lay a water supply pipeline. But they have not been re-laid,” said Mr. Thomas.
Motorists and residents of Korattur said that people had a tough time as they had difficulty in commutation as many roads were slushy.
In the recent years, the residents find the roads in their locality in a bad shape as one or other infrastructure projects are being taken up simultaneously.
As the trenches dug for the sewerage network were not covered properly, vehicles were trapped in the slush.
A vehicle loaded with tiles bound for a construction site on East Avenue was trapped in the slush and it took almost half a day to retrieve the vehicle, construction workers said.
Officials of Chennai Corporation said that they would keep the trouble to a bare minimum while taking up infrastructure works.
