Several residents of fishing hamlets along East Coast Road took to the roads on Saturday alleging that government lands in the area had been usurped.
Traffic was affected for more than half an hour when residents of Karikattukuppam near Muttukadu staged a road roko. They alleged that a politician’s relatives had usurped nearly 80 acre of government land and prepared fake documents to sell plots.
S. Murugan, secretary (Kancheepuram district) of South India Fishermen Forum, said that coastal regulation zone rules were violated. “We have been struggling to retrieve the land. On Saturday, several people came to our hamlet and threatened us with weapons.”
The residents dispersed after police pacified them. While residents said they have lodged a complaint against those who threatened them, Kanathur police said they have not received any complaint.
