For the second time this month, portions of Anna Main Road in K.K. Nagar collapsed in two places on Thursday, posing a threat to motorists.

Traffic on the busy stretch worsened as a large portion of road near MGR Nagar caved in on Thursday morning. Residents said the crater, measuring nearly 6 feet in diameter, was noticed around 8 a.m.

Even as the Chennai Corporation workers were involved in filling up the pit, another portion of the road, on Alagirisamy Salai and Anna Main Road junction, collapsed around 2 p.m. The stretch was barricaded to carry out restoration work.

Residents said, only a few days ago, another part of the road had collapsed during heavy rains. They said such incidents occurred whenever water or sewer pipelines suffered damage.

G. Selva, CPI’s (M) Virugambakkam area secretary, said the road was an important link between Ashok Nagar, K.K. Nagar and Nesapakkam.

“What if it had collapsed during the night or if someone had fallen into the pit? Officials must conduct a detailed study of the roads to prevent such accidents,” said Mr. Selva.

Metrowater officials said a team inspected the spots where the road caved in. “There has been no leakage of water or sewer pipelines. We will carry out a thorough inspection of the network on the road and take up a project to prevent such accidents,” said an official.
