March 27, 2014 12:25 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 06:23 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Residents’ welfare associations of Pallavaram and Chromepet that threatened to boycott the Lok Sabha polls have now arranged a meeting with the candidates of major political parties in the fray for Sriperumbudur constituency.

The meeting will provide a platform for residents to air their grievances. For the candidates, it will be an opportunity to strike a chord with the electorate, said C. Murugaiyyan, secretary of Federation of Civic Welfare Associations of Pallavapuram municipality.

The associations had decided to boycott the elections to express their displeasure over civic and social problems in their neighbourhoods.

These inckuded higher sewerage charges proposed by Pallavapuram municipality, provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act (AMASR), 2010, by the Archaeological Survey of India, and non-commissioning of Radha Nagar subway work.

“The invitation was extended to candidates of major political parties. Many candidates have agreed to take part in the meeting which will be held from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at Anandha Marriage Hall, GST Road, Chromepet, on Saturday,” said Mr. Murugaiyyan.
